NUC to Approve 150 More Private Varsities in 3 Years
The Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC), through its Executive Secretary, Prof Adamu Abubakar Rasheed, revealed over the weekend that there are plans to give accreditation for 150 additional private universities in the next three years.
While he made this statement, Prof Adamu Abubakar also took a shot at people in the public sphere who have been calling for the suspension of approval for the establishment of such schools.
He was speaking at the first founders day lecture of the University of Medical Science, in Ondo State where he analysed the Nigerian universities system and had in attendance the State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, and Emeritus Prof Oladipo Akinkugbe.
He also stated that Nigerian universities cannot isolate themselves from the rest of the world as anyone calling for the stoppage of issuance of license to more universities is ignorant due to the fact that the 152 universities in Nigeria are not adequate for a population of over 150 million people.
He made an example of Argentina where the country of just about 44 million people have 1705 universities and other developing countries with lesser population than Nigeria have over 300 universities.
He stated that about 243 applications are being processed at the moment for private universities.
