Gunmen Kill Cop, Injure Two Others in Bayelsa
Four gangs of unidentified assailants have killed a police sergeant and injured two others at a checkpoint in Bayelsa State.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Asinim Butswat, who confirmed this added that the hoodlums also disarmed the policemen and left with their weapons.
According to him, the crime was committed on September 4, 2017, at about 8.30pm.
He said that policemen were on patrol along Kolo 2, in the Ogbia Local Government Area, when the hoodlums, suspected to be militants attacked them.
Investigation showed that the gangsters were carrying bunkered kerosene in their vehicles when the policemen stopped them.
Eyewitnesses account revealed that the hoodlums opened fire on the policemen immediately, killing one and injuring two.
They pursued the two other policemen to their station after they had disarmed them, an eyewitness said.
“The other two policemen ran into the police station. The hoodlums reportedly chased them into the station, but left without further attacks.”
However, the Bayelsa State Police Command, in a communication on Tuesday, alleged that members of the immediate community assisted the hoodlums to attack the policemen.
