Cross River Govt Uncovers 758 Teachers With Fake Certificates

Cross River State Government has uncovered 758 teachers who have been teaching in its public schools with fake certificates.

The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Stephen Odey, made this known on Wednesday, adding that they had since been demoted with some of them now to work as gatemen.

He noted that a Head Teacher on Grade Level 13 was parading a fake certificate and had since been demoted to Grade Level 04.

Meanwhile a gateman (Names Withheld) has gained promotion as teacher because he has the relevant qualification, the SUBEB boss said.

Besides the unqualified teachers, the board also discovered about 700 ghost teachers in the public schools. He said that the fake certificates had been confiscated while the ghost teachers had been fished out.

He said: “We got a lot of petitions from stakeholders intimating us about the presence of teachers in the system who are using fake certificates and we had to embark on a screening of the teachers across the state and what we saw was marvellous.”

He said that government had come out with new strategy to ensure that unqualified teachers do not get into the system anymore.

Asked why the teachers were not sacked instead of demotion, the SUBEB Chairman said that the government had been lenient so as to prevent unemployment and curb crime.
