Abakaliki Bag of Rice Now Costs N8, 000 In Ebonyi

A 50kg bag of rice is now being sold at N8, 000 in Ebonyi State, the Central Bank of Nigeria has disclosed.

The Acting Director, Corporate Communication, CBN, Mr Isaac Okoroafor made this known while addressing farmers at a sensitization workshop in Bayelsa State.

He said that Abia State Government had since ordered for the rice for Christmas and New Year festivities.

Tagged “CBN Anchor Programme for Farmers” Okoroafor said that the ultimate goal of the government is to begin exportation of rice by 2017.

According to him, the Ebonyi State Government has surpassed its production benchmark, adding, “I expect other state governments to learn from this. At present they can order for the rice instead of seeking foreign rice.

He noted that farmers in Cross River states, Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa and Ebonyi have bought into the idea of massive cultivation of rice, stating that the Federal Government would encourage them to do well.

“ Kebbi State had already harvested one million tons of rice while Ebonyi’s harvest had outstripped the earmarked production for the year,” he said.

He described the development as encouraging, saying Nigeria rice is of quality and will dominate the international market within a very short period.

Besides food production, the CBN spokesman said that the scheme had raised the rate of employment as many youths have joined in rice cultivation.

In his comment, the Branch Controller, CBN, Yenagoa, Mr. Oke Nwajah, said the state was blessed with rich wet soil that supported rice cultivation.
