30 Die Watching Man United, Anderlecht in Calabar
About 30 people who were watching the match between Manchester United and Anderlecht clubs in the ongoing Europa League died at a viewing centre in Calabar on Thursday night.
They were electrocuted while the injured had since been taken to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitness, tragedy occurred when a transformer exploded while the football lovers were busy watching the game in a viewing centre at Nyagasang area of Atimbo in Calabar Municipality local government area of the state.
“It happened at about 9:30pm. The transformer exploded and we all ran out of the viewing centre to see what had happened,” an eyewitness who simply identified himself as John said.
He stated shortly after the blast, the fans went back into the centre and were cheering their clubs when the second blast occurred, killing almost all those at the place.
“Except for those of us outside, scores of people were electrocuted while some sustained serious injuries,” he said.
When our correspondent visited the place, it was observed that the viewing centre was built with Zink and iron bars that conducted electricity immediately the transformer exploded.
“Over 50 of us escaped death yesterday because we were standing by the door watching the game’’, he said.
ASP Irene Ugbo, the State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, adding that the hospital is yet to release the report of the number of casualties.
